To bring about qualitative change among vulnerable groups especially the tribal society (at family, village and society level) through animations, formation of people’s organization and advocacy.

About the Organisation

The Social Service Centre is the Social wing of the Catholic Archdiocese of Shillong, Meghalaya. Its office is located at the Archbishop’s House, Laitumkhrah, Shillong. It is a registered Non-Governmental, Non-Profit and Non-Political Organisation, registered under the Meghalaya Societies Registration Act XII of 1983, bearing the Registration Number SR/SSC-8/88 of 1988. It is working towards the integral development of all sections of the society irrespective of caste, ethnic groups and religion with special focus on the poor, the marginalized, the tribal community and other vulnerable communities, in the spirit of love and service. Formally, its area of operation included West Khasi Hills and Jaiñtia Hills. With the bifurcation of the Archdiocese of Shillong into the Dioceses of Jowai and Nongstoiñ, its present area of operation is in the East Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi Districts of Meghalaya. It has completed 30 years of service and facilitated the all round growth and development of people through initiating, planning, formulating, implementing, monitoring and evaluating various projects and programs for the upliftment of the poor, the needy and the marginalized.

Objectives

  • To device, execute and promote schemes and projects which foster and promote education, especially among the poor and the downtrodden.
  • To serve the cause of socio-economic growth of the people, especially the tribal population of Meghalaya.
  • To provide facilities and amenities aimed at eradicating diseases and improving the health of the people.
  • To help people in time of natural calamities and misfortunes.
  • To educate people and make them conscious about self-reliance, social justice and co-operation so that they may be prepared and equipped to secure a better future without infringing upon human rights and human dignity.
  • To undertake programs aimed at providing leadership training, especially for the youth and village leaders.
  • To coordinate the charitable works of various catholic social and charitable organizations working the Archdiocese of Shillong without infringing upon their autonomy.
  • To collaborate and co-operate with governmental agencies, financial institutions, voluntary agencies, national or international, with similar aims and objectives.
